About ama-laAn amazing trip to Northern India in 2004 resulted in a new business venture with the creation of 'ama-la' (meaning mother in Tibetan). 'ama-la' has grown and developed over the years. We now retail a wide range of products all over the country; please see our 'Events' page. During my visit to Dharamsala, where His Holiness the Dalai Lama lives in exile, I met many Tibetan people from all walks of life, nuns, monks, young and old, many who had made the incredibly difficult journey across the Himalayan mountain ranges to leave their homeland. Their journey takes at least three weeks across treacherous passes and over the past four decades tens of thousands of Tibetans have endured this arduous trip. On arrival in Nepal they are sent to Tibetan centres across India and it is one of these centres which supports Tibetan refugee children. To help with the care and education of the Tibetan refugees, skilled craftspeople make traditional items in their handicraft centre and 'ama-la' buys soft woollen shawls direct from one of the main suppliers. We now source world wide from ethical suppliers and support artisans and family run companies who trade fairly.
